Periskop DJ mix podcasted by RPWCS

Periskop RPWCS Balaklava Submarine Base

Last month yet another Periskop DJ effort was podcasted. This time by RPWCS (Rich People With Cheap Stereos), who operates out of Istanbul, Turkey. While the name of the series is found somewhere in Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho, the series itself mainly pushes pounding and industrialized techno mixes. It has existed for a couple of years and has already published +100 mixes.

Like my previous Periskop DJ podcasts, the mix features deep techno and some forms of dark immersive electronics. For this mix, I knew it would eventually need to reach 130 BPM techno territory, but I started out with one of the most catatonic industrial drone tracks ever made, and did not have a clear plan for how it would develop from there. As is apparent in the tracklist (scroll down), I ended up using tracks spanning two decades but with some emphasis on very recent releases. I steered into some downtempo territory early on, so had to attempt at the art of going from broken to 4/4 beats. Usually my mixes end on something completely different, that still matches the overall mood. This time it didn’t feel right to just kill the momentum, but luckily I had just the right Iron Age battle song ready at hand.

The artwork for the podcast is a treated photo from inside the Balaklava Submarine Base on the Crimean Peninsula.
