Periskop set on The Memoir with unreleased solo and collaboration work

Gustave Dore shipwreck corsaire

After several podcasts with Periskop DJ sets over the last few years, I decided it was time to make a set just with my own material. As I don’t do live PA’s, I did not have an existing Periskop live set to adapt, and could think everything from scratch for this podcast appearance.

The set is podcasted as the fifth episode of Swedish podcast series The Memoir, which “is a place where talented electronic music producers are invited to make a recording consisting entirely of their own creations. A memoir.” It is operated by Hypnus Records, that is also responsible for the sibling deep techno label Kabalion Records. The latter has been the main outlet for Periskop releases these last few years.

Periskop Old Laptop Fruity Loops

In 2015, I dug out my old Windows 2000 (beta) music making laptop again to fix some tracks for the 2015-2016 releases. It has stayed operational since then, and I have worked on it a handful of times during 2016-2017 to make various dark ambient and deep techno tracks. Some of these unreleased efforts are featured in this set (tracklist below), and count remakes of old tracks and further work on old sketches.

The set also features some of my collaboration work – old and new. The two Periskop & Kiloton tracks are from a large body of work made in the mid-00s with the talented but sadly nonprolific Kiloton project. His only album to date is the 2010 LP Language Lost on Uhrlaut Records. The last part of the set is a track from the Danish doom metal band SOL, with which I am currently affiliated. The track is from recent recording sessions following our release of The Storm Bells Chime on Avantgarde, 2016.

Periskop release tour PB43 Danny Kreutzfeldt Christian Villum Uhrlaut

It is now one year since Periskop – 40 was released as a vinyl LP+USB and as free mp3 download on Uhrlaut Records and

It contains forty full-length albums in various electronic music styles and genres including industrial dub techno and submarine noise, and is the longest release in the history of Danish music.

To mark the release on May 25th 2013 we did a short Danish tour, which has been documented here. However, to mark it’s first year in the public domain I present some statistics on the release.

Free mp3 downloads

From the release date all forty albums has been available as a free 3.1 GB mp3 downloadable zip file containing all 288 tracks along with artwork files. Both on, as well as where ever the download link has been shared by me and others. A few weeks after the release date it was also possible to download each album individually as smaller free mp3 zip files.

The Amazon cloud hosting service has been used for it’s reliability and bandwidth. Not for it’s low cost. From there a total of 1.33 TB worth of Periskop album zips have been downloaded. To be exact 1397241 MB. With an average album size of the forty albums of 78.48 MB that equals

17804 albums downloaded, which is 577 days (more than 1½ year) worth of music playtime.

If you still have not downloaded the free 3.1 GB 288 track mp3 zip, you can do so here.

SoundCloud plays

The main streaming platform for the release has been SoundCloud with an unlimited upload plan. SoundCloud players are embedded throughout the Periskop website as well as where ever visitors, bloggers and media choose to share them. As of today there are just above 25.000 plays on the SoundCloud profile.

However, I have also used this profile for a few other non-Periskop projects including some old DJ mixes and some teasers for my drone doom metal netlabel. These account for a couple of thousand plays, which should be subtracted from the profile total of +25.000.

Official video uploads

Two official Periskop music videos has been put online. Both of them for tracks on the LP album. Together they have been watched 2662 times so far.

Periskop music video by Sune Petersen Motorsaw 1 A. V with Emil Brahe

The first one is a conceptual piece of synthetic video art by Motorsaw/Sune P for 1. A V (with Emil Brahe). It has been up on Vimeo since February 2013 and has so far been watched 1622 times and ‘loved’ by Vimeo users 74 times. Read more about the video here.

Periskop Tarfilm music video 1 A. I

The second one is a dramatic visceral video made from many hours of archival submarine footage by Tarfilm. It has been out on YouTube since June 2013 and has been watched 1040 times. Read more about the video here.

In the coming year I will probably be looking into releasing more official music videos.

YouTube uploads by others

An interesting phenomenon in present online music culture is the continuous work by more or less anonymous YouTubers, who are adding music they like as single image music videos to YouTube. This has made YouTube into the most comprehensive music streaming service for independent and underground music today.

I have been humbled to see almost all 288 tracks on the forty albums have been added to YouTube in these unofficial YouTube clips. I have not made a complete overview of the watch count of these, but while some only have a handful of views at the time of writing others already have more than a couple of hundred views. Like this one:

It will be interesting to see if YouTube can keep it’s status as the preferred streaming platform for many, and if these independent YouTube uploads over time will turn into the most significant source of proliferation for the Periskop music work.

Other streaming platforms

The Periskop LP album (the first of the forty albums) has from the release date been available on all the major streaming platforms. Spotify, Wimp, iTunes etc etc. It has also been made available on other social music sites such as and Bandcamp.

This has not nearly generated as many plays as YouTube or SoundCloud but some effort will be put into adding the remaining 39 albums to these platforms in the future.

There has also been some radio airplay as well as numerous DJ mix and podcast appearances of Periskop material, which is impossible to add up into one meaningful track play count. More about this on the blog at a later time.

Physical edition sales

Sales and shipping of the physical edition vinyl LP+USB are handled by the record label Uhrlaut Records, which have reserved the main stock for visitors on the Periskop and Uhrlaut websites, who are interested in a physical edition of the music otherwise freely available on the sites. As expected the physical edition of the release is not yet sold out, but sales are steady.

Release Tour Documentation

A tour through three Danish cities was undertaken prior to the May 25th release of Periskop 40 on Uhrlaut Records.

• Copenhagen on May 22nd at PB43 with Volto, DJ Sly Nein and Maltmaster Whiskybar
• Aarhus on May 23rd at Trøjborg Beboerhus with SOL and DJ Noianiz
• Aalborg on May 24th at Platform4 with Aedra

It turned out to be three intense days and nights, with plenty of interest, music, last minute planing, dodgy train WiFi, a bit of whisky and practically no sleep.

The digital content of the release (288 mp3 files and 40 artwork files on a USB) was finished after months of work on the night before the tour. This meant the assembly of the different elements of the physical edition gatefold started on the first day of the tour.

This also meant the uploading of the free download files took place whenever we were near stable WiFi, and that the coding of the Periskop and Uhrlaut websites took place in between the usual tour activities of traveling and setting up. On top of this, we were invited onto an early morning radio show on a nationwide Danish radio station.

Despite this, every evening was very enjoyable for me and went better than expected in several ways. It also turned out to be three very different evenings despite the concept for each evening was fairly similar:

A fitting venue. A bar with submarine friendly smoky whisky. A DJ who understands what’s going on. An introduction to the release by Christian Villum of Uhrlaut. A short talk about my music work by me. A complete playback of the vinyl. A live act/band with a heavy noisy sound and some talent.

Copenhagen on May 22nd at PB43

PB43 is an abandoned industrial complex momentarily available for cultural initiatives. It is not located centrally and the weather was bad even for a Danish Summer evening. Luckily people showed up anyway, and the fine but affordable selection of the Maltmaster Whiskybar made sure mood and temperature inside the concrete walls were good.

SOL sound testing

Trøjborg Beboerhus is a well-known venue in Aarhus among the non-established. We ended up with no organizers to make preparations so everything was done in a hurry. Including picking up equipment at five different locations for SOL – the six-person doom metal ensemble of the evening.

SOL live at Trøjborg Beboerhus

The SOL concert stole the show, and more than half of the crowd had clearly come for that part of the evening, emptying the bar twice. Luckily a handful of metal heads also blended in during the Periskop session, just as nobody seemed to be affronted by the crushing and yet esoteric doom metal of SOL. I guess there is still hope for my home town.

It is the second time Emil Brahe of SOL is involved with Periskop. First time was when we in 2012 recorded vocals for a track on the Periskop 40 LP.

Aalborg on May 24th at Platform4

In Aalborg, the Platform4 venue awaited inside the city’s closed down amusement park. While it was the least visited of the three evenings, it was also the one with the technically most satisfactory set-up, and the one with the most casual atmosphere. After the presentation and listening session, the local progressive sludge band Aedra played the first ever metal concert at Platform4.

Album update 6: Title. Artwork. Concept.

The title of the forthcoming Periskop album is 40.

Periskop 40 LP cover artwork by Yngve Stensaker and Danny KreutzfeldtArtwork by Yngve Stensaker & Danny Kreutzfeldt.

40 will feature 40 full-length albums. It will be released by Uhrlaut Records and PERISKOP.CC as a combined LP+USB physical format edition and as free download through

The LP will contain the first album, which should be perceived as the best I can do within the confines of the traditional full length music format. It consists of unreleased material and remakes of previously published Periskop tracks.

Eldorado vinyl pressing test pressLP test pressing has been approved. Currently awaiting the final product.

The USB drive will contain a digital copy of the LP as well as 39 albums as bonus material. The bonus material is currently being compiled out of the vast body of music work I have made since 1998. It will consist of:

  • Outtakes for the LP material
  • Tracks or remakes of tracks uploaded to the 2007-2012 Periskop site
  • Tracks or remakes of tracks previously released as Danny Kreutzfeldt
  • Tracks or remakes of tracks previously released as Sgnl_fltr
  • Tracks or remakes of tracks previously released as Sectorchestra
  • Tracks or remakes of tracks previously released as Fallingapparatus
  • Previously unreleased tracks

All of the above material will also be made freely and readily available as stream and download on the new Periskop website. For copyright reasons the bonus material does not contain remixes nor material from collaboration projects.

File management. External harddrives. Laphroaig cup.File archaeology. 14 years of music work on these 4 harddrives (95% from 2000-2008).

Despite the diverse sources of the bonus material, it will be presented as a coherent whole representing my work as a solo musician in the context of the Periskop project. This means all previously released solo material will be credited to the Periskop guise under new track names, in new album constellations and in some cases as new versions.

Next update will feature material from the LP. We are still operating with a release date in Spring 2013.
